General anatomy

Types of Cartilages

HYALINE

ECM Contains Type 2 Collagen , Aggrecan , GAGs , Proteoglycans

Chondrocytes & Chondroblasts

Glassy , Homogenous , Basophilic

Perichondrium is Present (Except at Epiphyses & Articular cartilage)

Thin collagen Fibres

Weakest type of Cartilage

Calcification occurs during ENDOCHONRAL OSSIFICATION & with old age

Aids in Sliding within joint

Ex-  Nasal Septum , Cricoid Cartilage , Thyroid Cartilage , Arytenoids (except for Apices) , Tracheal Rings , Bronchi , Articular Cartilages at ends of bone , Epiphyseal plate , Costal Cartilages of Ribs , Embryonic Skeleton

ELASTIC

ECM Contains Type 2 Collagen , Aggrecan , GAGs , Proteoglycans

Chondrocytes & Chondroblasts

Yellow

Perichondrium is Present

Elastic Fibres

Stronger than Hyaline Cartilage

No Calcification

Provides Flexible Shape and Support

Ex- Apices of Arytenoids , Corniculate and Cuneiform Cartilages , Epiglottis , Eustachian Tube/Pharyngotympanic Tube , Pinna/Auricle , External acoustic Meatus

FIBROCARTILAGE

ECM Contains Type 1 Collagen (Mainly) , Type 2  Collagen , Aggrecan

Chondrocytes &   Fibroblasts

White , Eosinophilic

Perichondrium is Absent

Thick collagen Fibres

Strongest type of  Cartilage

Calcification occurs only with Bone repair

Provides Resistance to Tearing and Compression

Ex- Intervertebral Discs , Menisci , Pubic Symphysis , Glenoid labrum , Acetabular labrum , Manubriosternal joint , Lining of Bony Grooves for Tendons , Articular Discs (Temporomandibular joint , Sternoclavicular joint)

Note - Hyaline Cartilage is Most Common type of Cartilage and Weakest type
