Histology

Types of epithelium

1) Simple Squamous Epithelium (Pavement epithelium) -

Alveoli of lungs

Body cavities Mesothelium (Pleura , Pericardium , Peritoneum)

Endothelium in Blood vessels & Lymphatic vessels

Endocardium

Thin segment of Loop of Henle

2) Simple Cuboidal Epithelium (Height of cells = Width of cells ; Rounded nuclei) -

THYROID FOLLICLES

CHOROID PLEXUS

Germinal Epithelium (ovary)

Fallopian tubes

Inner surface of Lens

Pigment cell layer of Retina

Proximal convoluted tubules of kidneys (Brush border cuboidal)

Note - LOOP OF HENLE /ANSA NEPHRONI is lined by Both Squamous and Cuboidal Epithelium at different parts

3) Simple Columnar Epithelium -

Ciliated columnar - Bronchi , Uterus , Uterine tubes

Non Ciliated columnar - Digestive tract , Bladder

4) Pseudostratified Ciliated columnar epithelium (Has only single layer of cells but its nuclei is placed at various levels ,  falsely suggestive of Stratified epithelium)

TRACHEA & most of Upper respiratory tract

5) Stratified Squamous Epithelium -

[ Columnar cells - Deepest layer/Basal layer

Polygonal cells - Middle layer

Flattened / squamous cells - Superficial layer ]

can be Keratinized (or) Non Keratinized

Stratified Squamous Keratinized epithelium - Oral mucosa , Ducts of Sebaceous Glands

Stratified Squamous Non-Keratinized epithelium - Cornea (has 5 Layers) , Pharynx , Esophagus , Vagina , Fossa navicularis of Urethra .

6) Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium -

Ducts of Sweat Glands , Salivary Glands , Exocrine Pancreas , Mammary glands

7) Transitional Epithelium - {Also called UROTHELIUM , as it lines most of Urinary tract}

[Columnar / Cuboidal cells - Deepest layer

Polyhedral / Pear shaped cells - Middle layer

Polypoid / Dome-Shaped / Umbrella shaped cells - Superficial layer]

Collecting Ducts

Renal Pelvis & Calyces

Ureter

Urinary Bladder

Pre-Prostatic and Prostatic parts of Urethra

Note - It is called Transitional Epithelium because it undergoes transition from Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium in a relaxed State to Stratified Squamous Epithelium when it is stretched

Epithelium of anal canal :-

a) Colorectal zone / Upper zone / Zona columnaris (Above pectinate line / Superior anal canal)  - Simple columnar epithelium

b) Transitional zone - Both simple columnar epithelium and stratified squamous epithelium

c) Anoderm / Zona hemorrhagica (area between dentate line and anal verge) - Stratified squamous non-keratinized epithelium

d) Zona cutanea / Cutaneous zone - Stratified squamous keratinized epithelium
